The
outstanding Brazilian born interpreter Maria Clara Villa-Lobos
will create a solo together with Portuguese dancer and choreographer
Lilia Mestre. They are both known for their concentrated works
that are interspersed with fantastic and sensuous absurdities.
"The main themes of my work is mankind and identity, how one
reconstructs one self in different contexts, what is innate
in nature and what is controlled by culture. The constant
adapting to new circumstances and therefor the ongoing process
of transformation is a very stimulating subject. Maria Clara
invited me for my quest on identity and I'll be interested
in 'Faces' to study the performer's ability to be many. My
desire is to give importance to the performer and to the 'performativity'
as the place to transgress rules of which you are and to find
the complexity of being many in one." Lilia Mestre
Maria
Clara Villa-Lobos (B)
studied classical ballet and modern dance for three years
at the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin. In 1992 she joined
the Caprioli Dance Company in Sweden, and later, after studying
at P.A.R.T.S., she has been working with choreographers such
as Rui Horta, Willi Dorner, David Hernandez, Thomas Lehmen
and Sasha Waltz. Since 1996 she also realized her own choreographies
like home Sweet Home,Crash, Trio, XS, XL.
Lilia
Mestre (P/B)
worked since 1992 as a dancer and or collaborator with Vera
Mantero and within Les Ballets C. de la B. with Hans Van den
Broeck and Christine de Smedt. Since 1998 she developed her
own work. She created the solo Untitle me (99) in collaboration
with Davis Freeman which toured internationally. As a performer
and artistic assistant she collaborated with him on the project
Too shy to stare (01). Recently they created Fading
Fast for the International Dance Festival in Berlin (2002).

a choreography made in collaboration with the composer Carlos
Caires and performed by Martin Nachbar (comission of CC Belem/
Lisboa 02). Lilia Mestre's next creation Beyond Mary and
Joseph, a performance/ installation for 4 dancers will
have its premiere in Beeldenstorm Festival, Kortrijk 2003.
